| About Yourself: |
i'm a 25 year old headhunter. got into the hobby by looging onto www.fishforums.net when i had a problem with my basic fish tank and never looked back. i dont own any fish/plant related books and have learnt everything from members of that planted tank forum. i actually have 3 planted tanks the 180, a juwel rekord 60 with a sandy layout and a 50G cube. |
| Advice: |
for a planted tank setup i cant emphasise enough the use of laterite and CO2. one of the main reasons for failing with swords etc (heavy root feeders)is a lack of nutrients at the roots. laterite is reasonably affordable and will last years. on the co2 front, adding a basic yeast type co2 kit will improve any planted tank in one simple step. i will always use some kind of co2 in any planted tank regardless of lighting levels.
and more importantly than anything weekly ewater changes (if adding dry ferts 50% to dilute the last weeks fertaliser leftovers) |

| About Yourself: |
Work for a worldwide excavator production company (NOT Caterpillar) but we do hold the land speed record for the fastest desel engine as from 2006.) as an Industrial Engineer.
Have kept a tropical tank for around 27 years and it's that long ago I can't remember what got me into it, probably the beauty of the fish in particular the Siamese Fighting Fish which I managed to breed a few years back. Sat up until around 2.30 am watching them fertilize the eggs and put them into the bubble nest. In general I just love keeping fish and find it rewarding once the tank is all set up and planted out well, the latter being the hardest to do for me.
Pete. |
| Advice: |
Never be too eager to put new fish into a tank, Always quarantine them first. I have learned from my mistakes. Don't forget to change around 10 to 15% of the water once or twice a week.Although some people disagree with this but because I live in a hard water area I filter natural rain water for topping up the tank and since doing this the fish look a lot healthier and the catfish have started laying eggs on the glass.
Just by watching your fish on a daily basis you get to know when they are happy or are in anyway stressed and can act accordingly.
Addition 24/11/2006 > Have set up another small breeding tank for my Corydoras and currently have about 20 baby Catfish and believe it or not some are Bronze Cory's and some are Peppered, so they are all breeding at the same time. Fantasic. Will add photo of babies when they are large enough. |

| Description: |
Diy project done September 2007, it is now fully set up and (touch wood) in six months I have only lost one of 70 odd fish, but gained three baby catfish and one Zebra danio. Which all somehow managed to survive in the tank without being eaten by the larger fish.
The tank is 10ft long x 16" high x 15" depth. The stand is made of 2" X 2" steel box section and will hold the weight of over 2 tonnes,On top of that is a timber flat base and polystyrene. All the doors are pine and painted. The hood is pine and primed and painted. The glass is 8mm thick but the bottom has an extra section (which is 16mm smaller than the base) thus forming and corner to bond the sides to. Used six tubes of top quality silicone. But was still petrified when I GRADUALLY filled it. (No leaks. phew!!)There are 2 x 42" T8 Auaqglow lights and the condensation tray is made from poly carbon and cut into 6 sections with handles fitted for ease of access to any section of the tank.
The are 2 external fluval 405 filters and 2 300 watt heaters. |
