About Yourself: Got into the hobby throught a friend, had no idea how addictive it could be. I'v been keeping tropical fish for around 4 year on & off.
Advice: Get the biggest tank you can afford. From my experience the bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain water conditions. Research the water conditions you need for the type of fish you want to keep.

About Yourself: First and foremost I'm a dedicated believer and follower of Jesus Christ. Beyond that I'm a Construction Worker by day and a Web Designer by night. After a long day of hard labor there is nothing more relaxing than planting myself in front of my aquarium and shedding the stress of the day.
Advice: My advice to any beginner is to start small and aim big. A larger size tank can be quite a commitment. If a beginner jumps right into a larger size tank they can easily find themselves overwhelmed by the time and effort it takes to maintain a good healty environment for their fish to thrive. Don't sweat loosing fish, it happens to all of us no matter what the experience level. Most importantly have fun. It's just a hobby, if it gets too serious it's time to get out.
Fish Kept: I have 3 different varieties of Peacock Cichlids - 1 Red Zebra Cichlid - 1 Electric Blue Cichlid - 1 Green Terror Cichlid - 1 Electric Yellow Cichlid - 1 Big Lipped Cichlid - one Albino Cichlid and 3 Cichlids whos species origin is yet to be identified. I also have one Dinosaur Birch who my Cichlids seem to leave alone and two very small plecostomus but one of them I'm growing for another tank tht is still cycling.
Plants Kept: A variety of different artificial plants. I plan to gradually replace all of my artificial plants with live ones but seen as how this tank is only a few months old I havent gotton to that point yet.
Tank Size: 55
Description: Im Using an All Glass 55 Gallon aquarium with the demensions of 48" Length, 12 1/2" Depth and 18" High. I'm using a ProQuatics canister filter 2400 with a Fluval 304 canaster filter for backup and even though this combo is slightly overkill it keeps the tank very clean for a healthy Cichlid habitat. For lighting I'm using a 48" 1219 mm Reef Sun 50/50 florescent lamp by Zoo Med Aquatics. For superior airation and circulation I'm using twin power heads. Heating is provided by a 200 W submersible heater.

This is an old photo of our 90 gal freshwater tank, but even though it's old it gives you a good idea of how it is placed in our house. We converted a hallway closet into our 'tank room', custom built a stand for the tank and cut a hole in the wall. The house is a loft style, so when you walk into the front door and look up to the second floor you see the tank in the hallway wall.

Advice: The more you read and learn about water maintenance the better off you will be. Learn as much as you can.. Water maintenance is the key to healthy long living fish.
Fish Kept: 2 tiger oscars and 1 albino tiger oscar, upside down catfish to keep it clean. Oscars are still small with biggest one being approximately 2 inches long. Plan on upgrading to a bigger tank..
Plants Kept: A few volcanic rocks and fake plants. The rocks are good for the PH levels in the tank.
Tank Size: 55

About Yourself: Brand new in the hobby, but have several friends who know the hobby, and have helped me out. Thanks for looking!
Advice: Research!!!

My tank is relatively young, and I learned from my mistakes. Until my tank was properly cycled, I did unfortunately lose a couple platys and tetras. Now, I am correctly cycled, and everyone inside is happy.
Fish Kept: 3 Bolivian Rams
3 Apistogramma Cacatuoides
5 Asstd Platys
5 Otocinclus
4 Peppered Corys
1 Cardinal Tetra
2 Bamboo shrimp
15 Ghost shrimp

Believe it or not, everyone gets along 110%. I thought I would lose a few ghost shrimp, but they have not been touched.

I'm at maximum capacity, so I do 25% water changes/vacuuming every 1.5 weeks.

Feed: Flake and NLS Cichlid Formula, and freeze-dried brine shrimp every few days.
Plants Kept: All plastic and silk. A combination of Sea Garden, Tetra Water Wonders, and Penn Plax plants.

I use Malaysian driftwood, which really accentuates the tank.
Tank Size: 72
Description: I first would like to thank the RMFT community for giving me ideas with starting this beautiful hobby. My tank decor was influenced by many of you here, so I always give credit where it's due.
My Tank:
72 Gal Bowfront
Eheim 2217 Canister Filter
Two Rio Powerheads (Rio 600 & 400)
200w Heater
Air pump w/ 3 stones
Marina brand Background

My water stays crystal clear and chemically balanced. My driftwood does lower the pH, so I have to pH Up on with water changes. I really don't like using chemicals more than I have to.

About Yourself: I'm crazy in love with fish. Google "Future-PhD" for my fish photography!
Advice: It's a good idea to research fish species before choosing fish, and join forums, read books, ask questions, and definatly learn about water chemistry before you set up. Give "fishless cycling" a try.
Fish Kept: Pseudotropheus elongatus Usisya Pseudotropheus saulosi Pseudotropheus zebra cobalt (maylandia callainos) Pseudotropheus demasoni Placidochromis phenochilus Labeochromis fuelleborni Cynotilapia afra Mbweca Cynotilapia afra Hai Reef Synodontis multipunctatus Lamprologous occelatus
Plants Kept: none
Tank Size: 75
Description: Minimum of 2 HOB Emp 400's for each tank, no matter what size. All natural materials for decore, still experimenting with lighting (since this catagory is the costliest) but cheep-o fixtures with white fluorescent tubes are all I can afford. Rocks are still free -- thank god.
