My 55 Gallon Cichlid Community |
| Quote: |
"I will make you fishers of men" |
| About Yourself: |
First and foremost I'm a dedicated believer and follower of Jesus Christ. Beyond that I'm a Construction Worker by day and a Web Designer by night. After a long day of hard labor there is nothing more relaxing than planting myself in front of my aquarium and shedding the stress of the day. |
| Advice: |
My advice to any beginner is to start small and aim big. A larger size tank can be quite a commitment. If a beginner jumps right into a larger size tank they can easily find themselves overwhelmed by the time and effort it takes to maintain a good healty environment for their fish to thrive.
Don't sweat loosing fish, it happens to all of us no matter what the experience level.
Most importantly have fun. It's just a hobby, if it gets too serious it's time to get out. |
| Fish Kept: |
I have 3 different varieties of Peacock Cichlids - 1 Red Zebra Cichlid - 1 Electric Blue Cichlid - 1 Green Terror Cichlid - 1 Electric Yellow Cichlid - 1 Big Lipped Cichlid - one Albino Cichlid and 3 Cichlids whos species origin is yet to be identified.
I also have one Dinosaur Birch who my Cichlids seem to leave alone and two very small plecostomus but one of them I'm growing for another tank tht is still cycling. |
| Plants Kept: |
A variety of different artificial plants.
I plan to gradually replace all of my artificial plants with live ones but seen as how this tank is only a few months old I havent gotton to that point yet. |
| Tank Size: |
55 |
| Description: |
Im Using an All Glass 55 Gallon aquarium with the demensions of 48" Length, 12 1/2" Depth and 18" High. I'm using a ProQuatics canister filter 2400 with a Fluval 304 canaster filter for backup and even though this combo is slightly overkill it keeps the tank very clean for a healthy Cichlid habitat.
For lighting I'm using a 48" 1219 mm Reef Sun 50/50 florescent lamp by Zoo Med Aquatics.
For superior airation and circulation I'm using twin power heads.
Heating is provided by a 200 W submersible heater. |

My 55-gallon that serves as a room-divider (thus why random lights and things are visible behind it), containing angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), pristella tetras (Pristella maxillaris), and serpae tetras (Hyphessobrycon eques). |
| Advice: |
Google everything, always put in LESS food/medication than the instructions indicate, and MAKE SURE you have a quarantine tank at the ready for emergencies. |

Plan what fish you want before you buy a tank.
Buy your rock from a landscaping company and wash it, rather than from your LFS for 5X the price and you sill have to wash it. (60 lbs of rock for $8) |

Yet another updated 55 gal pic, current as of 28 Aug, 09 |
| About Yourself: |
I've been addicted to this hobby for only 9 months. I love it, I currently have a 30 and 55 gallon tank. If your looking to go freshwater......go with cichlids. You won't regret it! |
| Advice: |
Research, don't jump into things too fast (easier said then done) sometimes "trial and error' is the only way to learn. Ask questions. The WORLD WIDE WEB is your friend. You can learn lots of stuff on there! One last thing......change your water every week. |

I have over 3000 gallons in my fish room and to keep up with the water changes every week you really have to enjoy doing it. |

Been in the hobby for about 9 months now and have learned a whole lot, but everyday I learn more. I started with the semi agressive and then moved to the african cichlids, now i am a cichlid fan forever. |
| Advice: |
When starting out soak in all the info that you hear and combine it with your own judgement. Use valuable resources or you will waste alot of money, remember its a recession.it will take a while to figure out your own custom styles for your tanks so just be patient.
