I got into keeping goldfish when I was 15 (now 19) as a school project. When the project was over I wanted to save the cute little feeders from the mouth of a hungry Oscar, so I convinced my mom to let me bring them home. I lost 3 because I had no idea what I was doing, and soon found a great message board to help. I made the mistake of not taking people's advice at first, and probably lost at least 10 of my first fiish to pure stubborness. Last year I had to go away to school, and when I returned I only had 2 of the 7 goldfish I had when I left. I have since purchased a cute little crowned pearscale. The best advice to anyone who wants any type of pet is know what you want and how to take care of it before you invest yourself. You will save a LOT of money. |

Research! Even if you think someones claims (such as the required 10 gallons per goldfish) seem illogical and crazy, if a bunch of aquarium nuts agree, it's probably right. But always search for a second opinion! |

Running a Fluval FX5 that pumps about 600 gallons per hour, which is about 300 gph less than what I should have. 2 baskets hold Biomax, and the third holds 2 filter pads from an older, established filter, and 3 water polishing pads. 2 bubble walls keep the oxygen level up, and a regular light gives them the ability to not bump into the sides. |

I got into the hobby when i saw my friend from school had tanks and really liked them. I have had countless tanks as a result. I have bred livebearers, zebra danios, and convicts without much effort. Was not equipped to raise them at the time however. I am considering a serious attempt at breeding some fish once i get my big tank set up. We will see how that goes. |

Be patient and frequent water changes are vital.
Get a reliable heater---its a critical component. Do not overfeed!! Do not overcrowd either! |

29 gallon all glass aquarium rectangular.30 " long, 19" high, 12" deep. Fluorescent lighting (avoid incandescents), 150 watt ebo-jager heater in one, 150 watt Top Fin in second 29 gallon, 150 watt Tetra Whipser heater in third 29 gallon. Whisper power filters on all but 10 gallon fry birthing tank (sponge filter there). Also 10 gallon in daughter's bedroom with fluorescent hood, 50 watt Top Fin heater in there. Top fin heaters are submersible kind, Whisper heaters are not. I prefer the Tetra Whisper heaters. Ebo-Jager is top of the line though---worth the added expense. I have a 125 gallon coming in a few weeks. More on that once its set up. |
