| About Yourself: |
My father is a geology professor who helped origonate the idea of plate techtonics, my stepmother is a marine biologist who introduced me to freshwater fishtanks when she was studying crayfish behavior(she was far from the sea as we moved to Ithaca NY when I was ten). I used to raise fish I caught in the local streams and ponds. I buried flat rocks in the front corners of my tank and watched as the crayfish created their burrows, and then I was able to watch them as I had set it up so I would be able to see into their homes. I would return fish and crayfish to the stream when I went away for trips and when they got too big. I'm a respiratory therapist, I have an eight year old son, and we're both into fishtanks and N-scale trains. |
| Advice: |
Try live plants and make sure you have adequate lighting, and over-do the biological filtration. You will need to clean less often and you'll have a more stable ecosystem. |

| About Yourself: |
I started off with aquariums with my father when I was around 5 years old. Back then, I was more of the cleaner/maintenience boy then anything else. Now that I have my own place, I have 9 tanks, looking into getting a tenth soon (takeover my father's tank) I have been recently spending most of my time doing my Discus homework. I have a great set-up now with 11 Discus total, and I want to try and start breeding them. My main African tank is doing very well, I am carrying wellover a hundred different sorts of fry.. our last batch was 42 Electric Blues.. which I am really excited about. I'm having so much fun with this hobby, I can wait to pass it on someday. |
| Advice: |
Patience... the most important thing is patience.. but it's also the hardest to do too. Do your research on all equipment and know what your buying and using. Money can be wasted from both equipment and your fish. Some stuff I lucked out on, many things I found that can be much easier in matenience/ and overall use. Then ther are things you just buy because of the price... I really wasted a bit of money on horrible heaters.. within a few months all they do is take up room in the trash can now. I now have learned my lesson and before buying anything I now do TONS of research online, and over the phone.. trying to get as many opinions and suggestions as possible.. Most of the time you will find a pattern in peoples opinions. Nothing is better than having a great, easy, healthy, and beautiful aquarium... the horrible thing is losing those gorgeous finds because you rushed into something your not certain of. Don't learn the hard way.. it's really not worth it, trust me! |

| Description: |
I set this tank up after I got my own place. Several changes have occured since then, but the tank is doing very well at the moment. I am looking into taking over my father's tank, when I figure out how to move it over to my place. I added a daylight and blue actinic light to bring out some more of the colors in the tank. I have a standard double air pump with a wall of bubbles come up in the background. I try my best to lay off of the plants as much as I can, but sometimes I add it for a couple more hiding places for the smaller ones/females. I use lots of Lace rock, (I love the look) and I have added a bit of driftwood. Filters I use a few Whisper Tetras, but I am looking to switch to something else sometime in the future. |

another one showing size diff, not the best quality picture, am not expecting high ratings on this one, but it gives a clarity to the size of the fish, the young red turquoise upfront is about 3.5 inches in lengh the blue diamond is just about double the size of the red turquoise |

| About Yourself: |
I have switched from african and south american cichlids, to more docile fish, yes i know discus are cichlids, lol well i am more than just dabbling these days in planted aquariums, lol anything worth doing is worth doing right and with your foot to the floor so to speak, patience is key but don't be afraid once you have a properly cycled tank to add as many plants as you can properly sustain. |
| Advice: |
read, read, and read some more, don't go into anything blindly, the more knowledgeable you are the better off you are going to be and the less money you will waste. take your time and work up to it! |
| Fish Kept: |
discus, angels, tetras, cory cats many variety, fresh water clams, fresh water flounder, snails, algae eaters, danios,fw dwarf puffers, german blue ram, neons, and a few other misc fish from another tank i had setup. |

Proud daddy angelfish and his newborn fry. Not pictured: Mom, who is chasing away tetras. They surprised me with this spawn... I suspected they might be paired up, but I had no idea they'd go ahead and start a little fishy family. |

Google everything, always put in LESS food/medication than the instructions indicate, and MAKE SURE you have a quarantine tank at the ready for emergencies. |
