| Since 1903, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has maintained an aquarium and museum dedicated to public education and enjoyment. The new complex contains more than 60 tanks, three living tide pools, and an interactive museum. The aquarium's 13,000-gallon shark reef exhibit in the Robert Smargon courtyard is a highlight of the Birch Aquarium. Centered on science education, the aquarium has two seawater-equipped classrooms that adjoin the public display areas. A variety of educational programs are offered.

| SeaWorld was founded in 1964 by four graduates of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). It is a marine zoological park on 22 acres along the shore of Mission Bay in San Diego. With an initial investment of $1.5 million, 45 employees, several dolphins, sea lions, and two seawater aquariums, SeaWorld drew more than 400,000 visitors its first year. Offers travel through a submerged viewing tube, a pipeline to the center of the shark's world, one of the largest displays of sharks.

| View poison dart frogs, box turtles, sea horses, and clown fish in jewel tanks. Get an up-close look at sturgeon, giant sea bass, alligator snapping turtles, gars, and moray eels. Touch sea stars and hermit crabs at the touch tide pool. Enjoy the penguins as they preen on land and swim underwater. Interact with aquatic biologists as they study, feed, and care for the animals.
