Mike: Don't you already have nice sand? Your tank looks really nice as it is.
I don't know what's better. Most anything smaller than jelly bean sized is going to hold roots OK.

I think the best plant substraights have trace elements the plants can absorb, and I think sharp edges are a bit better than rounded.
