the liverock depends on what your putting in the tank..i would have around at least 100 lbs. of rock for a reef but with a fish only system you could have any where from 50 lbs and up

how big is the sump? I agree with Jav36 on the live rock figures........as far as pump return goes i would have a pump that can return 1/3 more than the sump takes i.e. if you are putting 100 gallons per hour in the sump [which is low but for easy math it works] you would need a pump capable of 130 GPH - - -i would recomend 3 times the tanks capacity per hour at least .....so thats 330 gph into the sump so at 400gph pump would be fine ....maybe even a couple 250 gph pumps ...that way in the dreadful event of a pump failure you still have one left to carry ........but thats me

Also is this a drilled tank or are you useing an overflow box? - - snowboss

If you have a 20-25 gallon sump, you'll lookin' at a 600-700 g/hr easy.Mag7 or 9 will does it, up to 4-5 feet.great long lasting and very dependable pumps. 100 lbs of live rock would be enough if you'd like to have more caves and holes, open spaces. 160-170 lbbs you could build a beautiful full wall, with a few caves. As jav36 said, depends what would you like to put in it. Corals, fish only?
