a local saltwater store told me that bio-wheels are useless in a reef, and i was instructed to remove them from the filter. any one have any knowledge on this?

usually the reef itself is all of the biological filtration you need... so i wouldn't rock biowheels either if i had a reef...

in an old post i was discussing with SWP about this topic. Reference that post. If you have live rock, denitrifying bacteria in the rock is parallel to nitrifying bacteria outside of the rock creating nitrate gas. If the nitrates created from the sump media combines with these factors this will in turn cause nitrates to blow up. This is a common reason for removing bio balls from what I am seeing and reading
