is it possible to have too many wats per gallon? i want to get metal halides but i have a plastic brace in the center of my tank. because of this i think i need two lights to avoid a shadow.

have you ever kept your tank in front of a window.sunlight is amazing and free.your tank and corals will never look so good with mh/powercompacts.the only thing is you have got to be a expert at water quality. try it you will be very happy!!!

i have a 40 gallon and i had the same idea you did, but i also have a cannopy, and the MH fixtures with actinics were all just to big for such a small tank , so i went with T5 HO, great results

and yes you can have to many watts per gallon, you will bleach your tank and burn your corals, i would say for sps, shoot for 7-8 watts per gallon and for lps around 4-6. you can keep both but placing corals properly will be important
