What are the best type of catfish that are able to live with cichlids...i know not all fish live in high pH waters, so i was just wonderding wat cat fish are best suited to these conditions?
also are there any special considerations for catfish wen there in a bigger tank with other fish...like do u have to feed them special food or anything like that?
thanks

I've always had luck with food that sinks for bottom feeders. Shrimp pellets work, but once the fish develop a taste for that other stuff doesn't look as good to them.

I keep a few Raphael cats in my tank. They have an armored "skin" and my Cichlids never bothered them. They grow pretty quick too.

I have a Rainbow shark in with my African Cichlids. The black catfish with red fins. He is now over 6" and holds his own with the aggressive Mbuna's. He eats the flakes and pellets along with all the other fish. I have never needed to feed him anything special.

Mro2you2 what are you talking about? a Striped Raphael Catfish can get to be 10" and that has to be ideal conditions and a large enough tank. In no way will they kill cichlids, unless you have a full grown cat and thrown tiny juvenile cichlids in with it. Ive got two of those cats in each one of my three tanks and have NEVER had any problems with them.

I have a 90gal African setup and I keep 2 synodontis and 2 pictus cats in my tank and my cichlids range from 2" to about 5" and I've had this set up for about 2 years now and everyone gets along fine. As far as food you want something that sinks I feed Dainichi sinking pellets and sinking shrimp pellets as treats and cichlids and catfish eat both.

My Raphael isnt 10". Hes only about 3-4. The growth rate of that fish to get 10" is not as fast as a Cichlids is to get 6-8" So yeah i trust them. Havent caused me problems to this date!

Not to mention that African cichlids are some of the meanest fish out there! I seriously doubt that one that is 3" and above would let a catfish eat it unless that catfish is huge!

A lot of people have good luck with the synodontis cats in with African cichlids. My Rainbow shark is ornery enough to handle anything the aggressive Africans dish out.

Upsidedown cats? VERY bad idea with Africans! Those cichlids would kill them off within a day.
