Does anyone know if I am supposed to replace the biomax part of the filter? Or do I just rinse them with tank water??

This is what it is.

thats where all your good bactiera is living, it should be in a bag, i ran a huge aquaclaer HOB filter on my tank for a year and about once a month or so i'd pull the bag out when i was doing a water change and put it in the bucket that syphoned out of the tank, while i was cleaing the sponge..........just swished it around to get the large chunks and crud off and put it back in the filter ...............................if you where to remove it completely and or replace it............it would start a tank cycle until it built the biologicals back up

other than a tank crash changeing it should never be needed ........if it really gets nasty, take half of the ceramics out and add new but not all at once

short answer .......no....................lol

okay. i knew that the sponge was like that but didn't know too much about the bio max thing because they don't even tell you what to do with it in instruction booklets. the company makes money off of idiots who buy all new filter products every 2-3 weeks.

as for the sponge............i cleaned the crap out of it every week or so, it really doesn't hold much benifietial stuff, more so thats where the crud and crap ends up, mine was 4 inches by 4 inches and 14 inches long and i didn't replace it in the year i ran the filter ...............i washed it in the washing machine twice and other than that just rinsed it really good in the sink .........i never replaced the ceramics, just a swish in the bucket and right back in the filter - - only thing i ever replaced was the carbon bag every 4-6 weeks

Yeah ditto. I have an aquaclear that used to be my main filter......now I just use it for carbon. But I never threw away anything. except the carbon of course.

yeah i really like the aquaclears i have always used them. you can even add your own types of medium to them and even make them into fuges.

good cheap bullet proof HOB filters...........nothing fancy and nothing to worry about - - -i have a 110 that was on my 20....it was a bit over kill but man it did the job, i put ceramics and a huge carbon bag in there..........never thought about useing it as a fuge, i think the pump on the 110 would be a bit much, but a smaller one would be perfect

Damn boss I bet it did do the job. Thats alright though. I have the 20 on my 2.5 gallon. haha. So I get yah. You could always just use the lower setting on the pipe to the pump. scoot the pipe to the right, and it will suck less.

I have a 20 and a 30 on my 30 gallon. They work fine.. you have to clean them every couple of weeks or they stop being efficient.

Just rinse in tank water during water changes , stuff lasts forever. They tell u two months because they need to make a profit.
Foam blocks used to last for a year ,now they make them so they fall apart in two months. So they can make a profit.

Whats great about Aquaclear filters, is you can be creative. With filter bags you can add anything to your filter that you can put in a canister filter. You can buy bulk much cheaper than inserts, and make yourself. You can use filter materials you cut to fit yourself instead of foam blocks, or in combination with.
