Today I saw some white spots on my guppies. I think from what I read it could be Ick or some fungus. If thats the case and if I buy the medication, will it cure the infection on the fish or do the fish have to be "put to sleep"?

OR, can some white spots be caused by excessive Nitrite? the tank is going through the nitrogen cycle still. Nitrate just began to go up, but Nitrite is still very high. I keep replacing some water.

My guppies and neons got a case of ick about 2 years ago when I first was setting up a 10 gallon tank. I put a 1/2 tablespoon of aquarium salt and turned on the heater to about 76 degrees and it cleared up without medication in about 2 days. Now after every water change, I put about a half of a dose of ick medication to prevent it and haven't had anymore ick.

Do as Sumthing Fishy did, but put your heat at 82 (86 if your fish can take it). Aquarium salt works great at preventing this..so if you don't currently use it research your fish a bit to see if they can tolerate it as a preventative dose during water changes.

ok so I added the blue color medication to my aquarium and brought up the temperature. Guppies can take it into high 80s. Did same for my betta just to make sure. I also added some salt to both tanks.
