What do you do to keep a Q tank in balance and always ready for sick or new fish when the tank will be empty for a while? I have a few Zebra Danios in my Q that will soon move to the main tank, then my Q tank will be empty until I have a sick fish or decide what fish to buy next. That could be weeks or a couple months. Well, ok. I probably can't wait that long to buy more fish, but it could be a month.
more specifically something not er, asexual? That the right word? Pond snails/ramshorn/MTS are all asexual so they'll change sex as necessary to reproduce, something like that.
Check out Mystery snails or Apple snails. I believe most varieties need a M and F to make your tank explode. Course that only happens from excess food. Snails are pretty sensitive to food availablilty and will reproduce specifically based on that.
Hmmm, ok. I think I have a plan. I have a Fancy Guppy who is getting his tail fin nipped relentlessly so I need to move him. I'm thinking of moving him to the Q tank and adding a few more Guppies to keep him happy. I want to protect the Guppy from the constant abuse and they're quite hardy so I'm thinking that the Q tank may be a good option. Better than icky snails....
For fresh water you dont need a Q tank, during the summer. Just the winter, because of the temp. But you still can, keep the water clear. Treat it like you will treat your "big" tank.
