I just did a quick skim of this posting:

It seems that in order to get full growth you'll have to fool it into "seasons" occurring within your tank. IE: modify your tank temp for long periods to put it into a "resting phase."
As you know this probably wouldn't be ideal for a lot of tropical fish species, as you'd see the most growth in temps between high 60's and low 70's. It also seems adamant that the bulb not be disturbed--and remain in the substrate.
